The Board and friends of the Lyme Public Hall—all COVID masked and socially distant—recently gathered in George House’s driveway for morning coffee and Flanders’ pastry. The gathering was to acknowledge and thank George for his recently completed fourteen years of service on the Lyme Public Hall Board of Directors. George is now taking a breather and stepping down from the board.
During those years, George was present for all major and minor activities at the Hall, whether public or private. Much of his service was performed alone and without fanfare: cleaning gutters, weeding, pruning, electrical issues. If it needed to be done, George did it.
One of George’s biggest contributions was during the prep for and the day of our annual Tag Sale. George, with his big white box van, collected households worth of furniture and goods, much of it in the months leading up to a sale. But it’s always on the day of a sale that George’s quiet demeanor, genuine smile, focused salesmanship and infinite patience — well almost infinite patience — truly paid off. If items didn’t sell, they had to be disposed of, so George always matched up buyers with goods and made sure that every tag sale was a success.
It is with sincere appreciation that the Board and membership extend our heartfelt thanks to George for his years of stellar service!
